A half hour before we took Oreo to the vet, I said to Melissa that if I could take his place and die that he might live, I would. Some people may think that's going too far for a mere animal, but I don't. When we spent the money we were going to use for a cruise to save the life of Miss Muffet 7 years ago, a few of my friends thought that was too much effort to make for a cat. In their eyes, I should have just let her die and got another one. But 7 years of memories versus max ten days vacation made it worthwhile to me.
The thought gave me a new realization of the depth of God's love for us. As soon as Adam and Eve sinned, Jesus went to the Father to offer Himself in their place. Otherwise, justice would have been served in destroying the guilty pair immediately. We're much lower in the spectrum compared to the infinite God than an animal is in relation to us. Yet Jesus chose to die for us. And the Father, in giving Jesus, showed His great love as well. (You see it wasn't that two people had sinned by eating that fruit. It was a planet with a population of two, that would one day rise to 8 billion, started a rebellion amidst an otherwise perfect universe.)
Eternity was the price Jesus paid in one weekend. The infinite God taking on human form made it an infinite sacrifice. Therefore He can offer forgiveness to all in any generation. And when we all get to heaven to be with the Trinity forever, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit will be happy they were able to save us.
