It's an interesting coincidence in the English language that the word 'science' is included in the word 'conscience'. Science, being the study of all that is in nature and the universe, be it the smallest phytoplankton to the largest galaxy; and conscience, referring to moral behaviour, which we correctly understand when we bring the Lord into the discussion. Just as there are two sides to the Ten Commandments, one dealing with our relationship to Him and the other our relationship to each other. Many may see no link, especially if they think all religion is a 'con'.
However, Psalm 19, if you read the whole thing through, does give us a link. The first six verses discuss the universe, which God created and works by certain natural laws. The next 7 verses give us a treatise on His Moral Law, which Law also comes from the same Creator. Verse 14 is a catch all verse which says:
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
So when ever we rightly meditate on nature, with the understanding it does show us His handiwork, we are glorying in Him just as much as when we meditate on the truths of the Bible. Modern science, in seeing all religion as superstition, cannot discern between good and bad religion. Bad religion, as I've said before, asks for blind faith because it mixes humanistic ideas into its interpretation of Scripture. Good religion is intelligent faith, which does take God at His Word, letting the Bible speak for itself, but in a way that includes all that is true and definitely provable by science.
I started to watch a great video on Ellen White and whether or not the health message given to us through her is scientifically provable. I made some comments on the YouTube link, which I will post below along with a link to one of my own health videos. Here are the comments for anyone to read:
I'm sure it must be the same in many parts of the world as it is here. A small percentage of Adventists who throw around the phrase "medical missionary work" mean it as solely applying to the ideas put forth in the first half of this video. I will say clearly it is all right and true and as an Adventist since 1988 I do believe it. But! When that small minority speaks, they seem to suggest that applying the ideas of that first vision will mean absolutely no sickness of any kind will come to them. They therefore bring in a counter-culture attitude towards modern medicine, sometimes to the point of even misapplying her words on the poisonous drugs of the 1800's to the many beneficial drugs we have today.
We see this most often when those extremists talk of the glory days of the Battle Creek Sanitarium and say that if we all were vegan and used nothing but hot water and charcoal to cure disease, we'd be as world famous now as we were then. To think this is to be in denial about two things. One, with the discovery of antibiotics and how their application reinforced the health principles of germ theory put forth first by Louis Pasteur, mainstream society has rejected NEWSTART as a way of life. This is because NEWSTART implies personal responsibility. And why do what you can to preserve your health if a pill will do it for you? Two, by calling us to establish Loma Linda, the Lord was planning ahead to keep us relevant in society's eyes. So our "Medical Missionaries" are in fact our doctors, dentists and nurses. Not unprofessionally trained people who teach NEWSTART in their own basements on Sabbath afternoons. It's because we have teams of doctors and their attending nurses who perform heart transplants on newborn babies that people will take us seriously when we tell them of the benefits of healthy living.
I am very glad you started your presentation with a clear statement that these health principles fight lifestyle diseases and help with infectious diseases. In other words, sometimes even when you try the home remedies and a good lifestyle, you might need antibiotics here and there. Statistically as a whole, Adventists are healthier than the mainstream population of society. But that doesn't mean we never get sick ourselves. When one does get sick, going to a doctor, taking the remedy prescribed along with living healthfully, is the best way to apply Ellen White's writings.
Let me say clearly I do believe in NEWSTART, though I am not vegan, only vegetarian, I have used hot water as a remedy for colds very successfully. But when it doesn't work, I trust the pills my doctor gives me.
I think the simplest way to describe the union of human and Divine nature in Jesus is to say He had a perfect, godly mind in a weak human body. When we debate whether His human side was a pre- or post fall nature, we are falling into the trap created by the doctrine of original sin, which I do not believe is truly biblical. My guilt is my own. I don't have a guilt transmitted to me from Adam, simply weakness of character. The idea of an overall defilement just for being human is what trips us up when we discuss Christ's human side. If He had a pre-fall nature in order to be sinless, it wouldn't be a true atonement. If it was post fall as most who believe in original sin see the post fall nature, then He wasn't sinless and again His atonement would be of no value.
